Caningeraba's Creative Minds Day of Excellence

This event has been running for the past six years and has very generously been sponsored by Education Queensland South Coast Region. The day was designed for students in year three and four to encourage students to be critical thinkers in preparation for lifelong learning. It was created for students with a passion for learning and problem solving, to demonstrate their skills and talents in an exciting, vibrant, and public way.

After the official welcome, students participated in various warm- up rotations. They included hands on science experiments. Concepts learnt were based on scientific principles that could be applied later in the long term challenge. We had Mrs Flynn from Miami High bring 12 year 7 past Caningeraba students to assist with the science experiments.  Rotation two, drama and stage craft were used to give students confidence when performing and presenting ideas. The final activity was spontaneous challenges. The focus being on team work and problem solving strategies such as; brain share, developing ideas and thinking outside the box. The Ideas generated on the day by students were truly incredible.  A big thank you to Mrs Wheaton, Mrs Flynn and the wonderful Miami High students for their time, efforts and expertise.

After a short morning tea, the two challenges were given. In groups of 6, students had an hour and a half to collaboratively decipher their challenge, design a device, create a play and make their costumes and props. Senior Caningeraba Tournament of Mind students and Student Council leaders were on hand to help the younger students with their challenge. They were very excited and gratified to be able to ‘give back’ and use some of the knowledge and skills they have developed in their leadership roles to help the younger students.

After Lunch, the groups presented their phenomenal solutions and plays. All groups produced performances that they should be very proud of. After some deliberation, awards and trophies were announced. By all accounts, students had an excellent day.
